Pop Realism - The painting process and methodology of Amy Hutchinson’s oil paintings
Amy begins her oil painting process by selecting a surface—canvas, canvas board, or wooden panel—often choosing unique shapes like ovals and circles, which adds a layer of difficulty in reproduction. She varies between gallery-wrapped canvases and framed surfaces, depending on the subject, as frames can alter a composition's effect.
Amy uses a wide range of colors, favoring tones like Naples yellow and cobalt teal. Sometimes, a color inspires her subject, as in works like “Cherries” and “Candy Apple.” Although she employs traditional oil techniques such as grisaille, glazing, and scumbling, Amy’s style, “Pop Realism,” also embraces bold compositions, unique perspectives, and scale.
Her preferred medium is Liquin, with varnishing applied to most pieces, except for some alla prima works. Beyond painting, Amy engages in woodworking, often restoring vintage frames by cutting, sanding, and refinishing them to complement each painting. Frames, whether hand-altered or store-bought, play a crucial role in enhancing the final artwork’s mood and style.
Amy teaches regularly scheduled classes at The Hub on Canal every Saturday at 10:00am and 1:00pm. Contact her at oilpaintingwithamy@gmail.com
